Sigma Chi Fraternity, Gamma Xi Chapter
About Sigma Chi
What is Sigma Chi?
Sigma Chi is an International Fraternity with its beginnings back in 1855. We are headquartered in Evanston, Illinois and have over 200,000 members worldwide.

Like all Greek organizations, Sigma Chi's ideals and purposes are set forth in a secret document called our Ritual. Sigma Chi also has a set of signs, symbols and heraldry which supports our teachings.
When was Sigma Chi founded? What was it founded upon?
The Sigma Chi Fraternity was founded on June 28, 1855, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. A conflict arose and caused a split among the members of the Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity. Some of these men believed that the sense of brotherhood in DKE was being abused; that they were being unfairly judged for their opinions; and that the other DKE brothers had ignored the fundamental values of the literary society to which they all belonged.

These three concerns encompass the root our Fraternity. Our Seven Founders, dissatisfied with the Greek system available at the time, decided to create a brotherhood that was based on the three ideals of Friendship, Justice, and Learning. And from this union, Sigma Chi was born.

Years after our founding, our Brotherhood was tested once again during the Civil War. Of the 432 members of our Fraternity, 265 of them served in the conflict -- 147 for the Union and 118 for the Confederacy. One Brother in the Confedracy, Harry St. John Dixon, organized secret meetings near Atlanta and brought our Brothers together. They honored the death of those who had died during the war. This turmoil tested our brothers' convictions, but it also brought our Fraternity closer together.
